5 fun food experiences in Málaga

Churros at La Malageña
Start the day with a billion calories at churrería La Malageña. Churros is a dough made of flour, sugar, salt and water that is deep fried. You dip it in thick, hot chocolate. It's a breakfast that can wake the dead, the Spanish say who love to eat them on the way home from a night on the town. What's so special about this place, is that it's a so-called maestro churrero, i.e. master of churros frying. That probably explains why it is packed with starving souls dunking crunchy churros in chocolate.

La Merced Food Market
Málaga, like all Spanish cities, has wonderful, traditional food markets packed with hams, vegetables, squid and other delicious things. But right by Pablo Picasso's birthplace, Mercado de la Merced has been given a fantastic facelift. Here, they specialize in a handful of products and you can both shop and snack at the various stalls. La Merced has a beer stall, cheese stall, cocktail stall dedicated to lemon cocktails and a pinxto bar. To name a few. It is also child friendly.

Antigua Venta San Antonio
If you want to step back in time, in comfort, Antigua Venta San Antonio is the place for you. It is an old inn dating from the 18th century. It is situated in Casarabonela, about 40 km from Málaga and just 20 km from the beautiful walking trail, Camino del Rey. The inn was originally used by travelers in Andalucía and housed both people and animals. However, the old stables have been converted into a restaurant where they server delightful dishes using Spanish produce such as pata negra, Mediterranean fish and fantastic fruit. You can also book a room overlooking the inn's orchard. The inn also hosts marriages, parties and other festive occasions.

Restaurante José Carlos García
The best food in Spain used to be found in the north of the country. However, chefs in Andalucía have upped their game and are now renowned for their quality and innovation. Such as José Carlos García, born and raised in Málaga. His restaurant on Muelle Uno (Quay One) in the newly renovated port in Málaga sources its fresh local ingredients from the fertile Andalucían plains. Nonetheless, it is described as avant garde. The restaurant has been awarded one star in Guide Michelin and two stars in the Spanish Repsol Guide to Spain and Portugal.
